Graham Hatch and A.J. Hawkins shot free throws in an empty Koch Arena on Tuesday afternoon, two hours before practice started.

When your team is 0-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, working on your game is about the only thing that feels good.

"We've got to keep working hard to build your confidence up," Hawkins said. "We've got to stay in the gym."

The Shockers (6-8, 0-3 MVC) face Southern Illinois (5-9, 0-3) tonight. Both teams are struggling. Both teams lack experience. Both teams play well for stretches, then fade. Both programs are used to much better times.

"We've always had a lot of older guys be our best players," SIU coach Chris Lowery said. "We're experiencing some things we haven't experienced in the past."

The population of Iowa is around 2.9 million, about 200,000 more than Kansas. If you follow Wichita State basketball, it seems like everyone of those 200,000 Iowans is a deadeye jump shooter.

"Seems" is the operative word, because there probably isn't a way to prove that Iowa produces more and better shooters than Kansas. The scars on the psyche of Shocker fans are the only evidence. Iowa shooters, past and present, stock the rosters of Creighton, Drake and Northern Iowa, not to mention Iowa and Iowa State. If the same number of shooters exist in Kansas, they are well-hidden. The only Kansans at Wichita State and Kansas State are walk-ons. Kansas snatched up two good ones in Brady Morningstar, from Lawrence, and Tyrel Reed, from Burlington.

That doesn't seem to compare to the recent pack of Iowans who make every shot against the Shockers. Kyle (Creighton), Klayton (Drake) and Kaleb (Creighton) Korver. Nate Funk, Ryan Sears and Michael Lindemann from Creighton. Northern Iowa's Ben Jacobson, who always seemed to torch the Shockers. Northern Iowa's Adam Viet made 7 of 13 threes against WSU last season, including a game-winner in overtime in Cedar Falls. Ali Farokhmanesh made 5 of 8 threes and scored 17 points in Saturday's 78-54 win over the Shockers.

Where do all these shooters come from?

The coaches aren't sure, although they appreciate the opportunity to praise high school coaches in Iowa.

x-assists

Southern Illinois: Dillard is carrying the Salukis since MVC play started. The reigning Illinois Mr. Basketball averages 19.7 points in three MVC games and has made 10 of 19 threes. "I like him a lot," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. "He's quick, he's fast. He really has a nice crossover to get where he wants to go.".... SIU is making 39.7 percent of its threes, which ranks 25th nationally.... SIU is down to nine players after the departures of freshman Torres Roundtree and junior Christian Cornelius. They left the team last week, both informing coach Chris Lowery by voicemail.... SIU is 0-3 in the MVC for the first time since 1987.

Wichita State: WSU has lost four straight to the Salukis and 17 of the past 20.... WSU may find success attacking Fay inside. Lowery said Fay is a good help-side defender, but needs to improve guarding his man.... Both teams have taken more threes than their opponents in MVC games. In a related stat, both teams have attempted fewer free throws than their opponents have made. SIU is 38 of 51 (opponents 66 of 82). WSU is 25 of 40 (opponents 42 of 52).... WSU is 0-3 in the MVC for the first time since 2000, when the Shockers started 0-9.

RPIs as of Monday: SIU 204, WSU 227

The last six months have featured a pretty big shakeup for Wichita State forward Daria Frazier and the way she plays basketball.

When Jody Adams took over as coach last spring, Frazier was moved from her traditional spot at small forward to power forward, where she has thrived, averaging 11 points and 6 rebounds.

So when the Shockers' two point guards -- Jacie Hoyt and Marisah Henderson -- fouled out late in WSU's game against Northern Iowa on Sunday afternoon, Frazier was thrown into a new role of handling the ball. And in a tough situation, no less.

Frazier responded by keeping the Shockers focused down the stretch and finished with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a 64-53 win.

Whether it was diving for loose balls or going to get the basketball when the Panthers were pressuring WSU in the full court, Frazier wasn't going to let the Shockers fall to 0-2 in the Missouri Valley.

Winless in three Missouri Valley Conference games with Southern Illinois up next is a rotten way to start 2009.

Wichita State put itself in that position with Saturday's 78-54 loss to Northern Iowa at the McLeod Center. UNI scored 50 second-half points to hand WSU its worst loss of the season. The lack of fight after a competitive first half disturbed WSU coach Gregg Marshall.

"That's about as bad as it's been for us," he said. "I want to give them all the credit possible, but we are obviously a team that struggles. What I'm disappointed in is our effort in the second half. Horrible."

WSU is 0-3 in the MVC for the first time since the 1999-2000 team began 0-9. To avoid that kind of fate, the Shockers need an infusion of offense. SIU, WSU's opponent at Koch Arena on Wednesday, isn't the powerhouse of recent seasons. But everybody looks formidable to the Shockers in their current state.

"We just played one half of basketball," WSU forward Ramon Clemente said. "Second half, we didn't have the same intensity coming out. That's not going to cut it."

Dickie Coy admits Wichita State seems like the perfect fit for his younger brother, two-sport athlete Johnny Coy of St. Joseph, Mo.

Johnny Coy wants to play baseball and basketball at a school relatively close to home. That school needs to have a scholarship available for the upcoming semester.

WSU checks every point on that list.

"Wichita State would make the most sense," Dickie Coy said.

The one thing WSU lacks is Drake basketball coach Mark Phelps. Phelps, as an assistant at Arizona State, built a strong bond with Johnny Coy. Coy committed to ASU as a junior in high school and spent the fall semester in Tempe. Phelps, meanwhile, moved to Drake to take over for Keno Davis last spring.

The last two seasons, Wichita State's women's basketball team has had many losses similar to the 69-49 rout Bradley handed out Friday night.

The Shockers had 10 losses of 20 points or more during the final two seasons of Jane Albright's tenure. Often, the first lopsided loss translated in to more.

WSU starters Marcy Sudbeck and Daria Frazier played in both seasons, while Jacie Hoyt redshirted in 2006-2007 and played key minutes last year. But with a new coaching regime and a new system comes a new philosophy in not letting those kind of losses pile up.

"This is a new team and we have a new mentality and we have to stick with it," Hoyt said.

First year coach Jody Adams faces the challenge of getting the Shockers to regroup for today's game against Northern Iowa.

Wichita State women's basketball coach Jody Adams said the roles were clearly defined in Friday's game against Bradley.

The Braves played the teachers, while the Shockers were the students.

Bradley taught WSU a lesson: taking any time during a game for granted, even just a few minutes, can be costly.

In their 69-49 victory at Koch Arena, the Braves raced to a 15-3 lead before the first media timeout.

Bradley's defense took Wichita State out of its game plan of getting out in transition, attacking the basket and getting to the foul line. The Shockers had been averaging 66 points and shooting better than 40 percent. Friday night, they made 35 percent of their shots.

Last season, Wichita State needed its walk-ons to start basketball games. This season, their job is strictly behind-the-scenes in practice.

Sophomore Bret Michael is desperate to help in that role. A concussion has benched him for almost five weeks, limiting him to watching practice and games. Lately, he is showing signs of emerging from the fog that drags down concussion victims. He smiles and moves with something close to his old abilities.

WSU (6-7, 0-2 Missouri Valley Conference) plays at Northern Iowa tonight. When healthy, Michael would help with preparation on the scout team.

"I just want to play," Michael said. "Sitting down is tough. It's definitely frustrating -- all the work we did in the preseason and in the first month of practice."

Headaches continue to bother him. Trainers regularly check his reflexes and symptoms to measure his recovery. Monday, he'll check his progress with a doctor.

The change has been coming since the first day the Wichita State women basketball team came under the direction of Jody Adams last summer.

Since then, each practice, each game, the Shockers have taken baby steps towards becoming a competitive team once again.

And almost halfway through her first season, Adams has completely changed the expectations in the program. The result has been an obvious one -- WSU's 8-3 record in non-conference play marks the best start since 1998.

Now the Missouri Valley Conference comes calling with the Shockers opening their conference slate hosting two home games this weekend, Bradley tonight at 7:05 p.m. and Northern Iowa on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.

"Each win has helped us build confidence," senior Daria Frazier said. "Having the best start since 1998, it gives us confidence. Since I've been here, I can't say that I've walked into the Valley knowing we could compete like I can now."

In a sport dominated by speed and agility, the senior who plays a more earth-bound basketball game made the biggest play.

Bradley forward Sam Singh followed in a missed shot with less than a second to play to give the Braves a 60-58 win over Wichita State on Wednesday night at Koch Arena.

"Sammy (Maniscalco) got a great penetration and I just followed it like we're taught to do," Singh said. "The ball took a good bounce and I got lucky."

Luck is something the Shockers (6-7, 0-2 Missouri Valley Conference) didn't generate much of against Bradley (8-5, 2-0). They couldn't handle defensive pressure early in the game and a string of turnovers handed the lead to Bradley.

The Shockers lost the battle at the free-throw line and on the backboards. That forced them to play from behind in the second half. The Shockers tied it 58-all, but that joy didn't last.

Missouri Valley Conference report

What long-time Missouri Valley Conference fan doesn't remember that decade with a smile at the talent, the rivalries, the excess and the old-school field houses? The Valley of the 1980s grabbed national attention with its wild and woolly, sometimes outlaw, ways. Many of the coaches loved the spotlight. Gene Smithson and MTXE and Wichita State's black uniforms. Tulsa's Nolan Richardson and his polka-dotted suits. Bradley's Dick Versace's flamboyant personality vs. Illinois State's Bob Donewald's rigid demeanor. Creighton's Tony Barone never skimped on words and colorful thoughts.

Those coaches and their personalities were as much as part of the theater as the game itself.

Now, not so much.

The Valley seems filled with coaches who work hard to be bland or are too new to raise a ruckus. WSU's Gregg Marshall may change that. He raised a mild uproar (at least in the Internet world) on Sunday by voicing displeasure at what he is sure was an attempt by Creighton to throw a lob for a dunk in the final minute of a 68-56 win. He promised, on his post-game radio show, to file that intent (the Bluejays didn't lob or dunk) away for future retaliation.

Marshall's vow probably won't mean much on the court when the teams play again. It will give fans something to chew on as the rivalry continues. Kind of like the old days, when Tulsa fans waved dollar bills at Smithson and Illinois State fans wore wigs to mock Versace's curly hair.

Every inch, every step helps when playing defense against three-point shooters. Wichita State is a little longer and a little quicker on the perimeter and it shows.

WSU is holding opponents to 31.7-percent shooting from three-point range, third in the Missouri Valley Conference. Last season, opponents made 39 percent against WSU, worst in the Valley at the old distance of 19 feet, 9 inches.

WSU coach Gregg Marshall didn't think the defense stunk last season and isn't thrilled with it now.

"It's OK," he said. "It better be good (tonight) for us to have a chance."

Bradley is in the unfamiliar position of ranking low among MVC three-point threats. The Braves are shooting 31.1 percent, ninth in the MVC. Their total of 241 threes attempted ranks sixth. Last season, they shot 925, 85 more than any other Valley school.

x-assists

Bradley: Maniscalco led Bradley with 18 points in Sunday's win over Southern Illinois. Wilson, from Topeka, added 17 points. Junior Dodie Dunson averages 11.4 points off the bench. Senior C Sam Singh returned after missing two games with a broken nose. He played 19 minutes and scored eight points Sunday. Junior Andrew Warren, who averaged 13.2 points last season, is out with a broken right foot. He has not played this season. The Braves lost sophomore F Will Egolf for the season to a knee injury after five games.

Wichita State: One thing even an inexperienced team needs to do is establish its home court as a tough place to play. WSU went 3-6 in MVC games at Koch Arena last season. Its 8-7 overall record represented WSU's fewest home wins since the 1995-96 team went 6-9. "You need to hold serve and take care of your business at home," WSU coach Gregg Marshall said. "That's the way conference play is." Marshall counted 14 open jumpers missed in the first 30 minutes of Sunday's game at Creighton. He also counted 11 shots around the basket in the first 30 minutes that bounced away. "We've got to knock those in," he said. "We've got to figure out a way to score inside."

RPIs as of Monday: BU 84, WSU 188.

WSU starters too much for Mercer

With only two points coming from the bench -- which had only three available players -- WSU scrapped past Mercer 71-59 behind its five starters on Monday night at Koch Arena in front of 1,670 in attendance to conclude it's non-conference slate.

"We live on an island," coach Jody Adams said. "It's us against the world. That's just how we think."

The victory pushes WSU's record to 8-3 on the season, marking the best start since 1998 when the Shockers started 9-2 en route to the school's first WNIT appearance. It comes in just the first season under Adams.

Already short on depth entering the season, the Shockers were without freshman Haleigh Lankster to cut their available players to eight. Lankster sat out due to an unspecified injury and is "day-to-day" according to Adams.

Wichita State showed no ill effects of the extended minutes, instead finding different ways to rest during the game. WSU drew 14 fouls against Mercer to reach the free throw line 18 times in the second half.

Wichita State handled the crowd and the press and even kept Creighton's Booker Woodfox from going crazy.

The Shockers, however, couldn't handle missed shot after missed shot. Creighton cruised past WSU 68-56 on Sunday night at the Qwest Center in front of a record crowd of 17,954. The Bluejays won their 16th straight over WSU in Omaha in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The Shockers shot 35 percent from the field, with the biggest guys on the court doing most of the missing. WSU's four tallest players combined to shoot 3 for 19 and score seven points.

"I wasn't strong enough with the ball tonight," WSU forward J.T. Durley said. "There's a lot of bodies in the paint. You miss one, and you run into another."

Durley shot 1 of 6 and committed three turnovers. Ramon Clemente, limited to 22 minutes by foul trouble, missed all four shots and finished with four rebounds, five below his Valley-leading average. Aaron Ellis missed two shots and didn't score. Garrett Stutz went 2 for 7 and led the group with four points.
