It's seems like a distant memory.

Three years ago, the Newman men's bowling team played for a national championship.

But since that runner-up finish, the Jets haven't even qualified for nationals, and getting back to that level is first and foremost on the minds of the coaches and bowlers.

Newman started its season Saturday at the Mid-States Championships at Northrock Lanes.

"There were high expectations last year, based on the way we bowled throughout the year," Newman coach Billy Murphy said. "The initial shock of not getting there was a pretty big deal."

It was a familiar sight for Friends' Cole Perry.

There was the opposing coach and quarterback huddling and singling out the 5-foot-10 redshirt freshman cornerback from Maize, formulating how to take advantage of the size differential.

Sure enough, the next play came Perry's way against a taller receiver. And yet another opposing coach found out that they can't take advantage of Perry's height.

Perry pedaled backward, read the receiver and jumped the route to pick off a fourth down pass early in the third quarter. The interception set up a 4-yard Chris Bolander touchdown run in No. 7-ranked Friends' 31-9 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God at Adair-Austin Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons improved to 5-0 with the victory.

Justin Cooper rushed for 115 yards and Garrett Cummings kicked two field goals for Washburn in a 14-6 win Saturday over Emporia State at Topeka in the Turnpike Tussle. It was Washburn's fifth straight win over the Hornets and the 105th time the two teams have played.

The Ichabods improved to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in MIAA play with

Andre Sloan El passed for 188 yards and a touchdown for Emporia State (3-4, 1-4), hooking up with Danny McEvoy for a 42-yard score.

Redshirt freshman Dane Simoneau, making his first start of the season for the Ichabods, threw for 115 yards.

The Washburn defense racked up 10 tackles for loss.

MIAA

Emporia State (3-3, 1-3) at Washburn (4-2, 2-2), 1 p.m. -- Washburn has struggled for consistency this season after some early highs (a national ranking and a road win over FCS opponent Missouri State) and lows (losing at Fort Hays State). The Ichabods seem to be figuring things out at the right time, and are on a two-game winning streak headed into today's Turnpike Tussle, the 105th meeting between the two teams. Washburn junior linebacker Zach Watkins, a preseason All-American, has lived up to the hype so far -- he's first in the MIAA in interceptions (4) and third in tackles (56).

KCAC

Southwest Assemblies of God (1-3) at No. 7 Friends (4-0, 4-0), 1:30 p.m. -- The Falcons didn't move up in the NAIA rankings this week, holding steady at No. 7, and are one of eight remaining unbeatens in the NAIA ranks. The Falcons have shown offensive balance this season, passing for 915 yards and rushing for 817. On defense, Maize product Cole Perry is tied for the KCAC lead in interceptions with two and defensive end Jordan Highley leads the KCAC with 4.5 sacks.

JAYHAWK

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --Riley Skinner threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Boldin with 5:28 left to help No. 21 Wake Forest beat Clemson 12-7 on Thursday night.

Skinner was 22 of 34 for 186 yards and led the decisive 15-play, 78-yard drive in the fourth quarter for the Demon Deacons (4-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference). Wake Forest outgained Clemson 342-198 and snapped a two-game losing streak in the series. Wake remains the only Atlantic Division team with a perfect conference record.

Shane Popham -- starting in place of injured kicker Sam Swank -- had field goals of 22 and 32 yards for Wake Forest, and a dominant defense held the Tigers' vaunted ground game to 21 yards rushing on 23 carries.

Cullen Harper was 15 of 35 for 177 yards with an interception for Clemson (3-3, 1-2) in the Tigers' second straight loss. His 10-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Ford with 7 seconds left in the third quarter put Clemson up 7-3.

Alphonso Smith's school-record-tying 17th career interception gave Wake Forest the ball inside the Clemson 20 and set up Popham's second field goal, which pulled Wake Forest to 7-6 with just under 13 minutes to play.

Thursday, in Ellisville, Miss., the No. 4 Butler Community College football team ran into some good fortune.

Then the Grizzlies went out and made some of their own luck.

After 10th-ranked Pearl River (Miss.) Community College upset No. 3 Jones County (Miss.) Junior College 26-22, the Grizzlies looked sharp in a 35-17 win over Hutchinson Community College.

Barring a surprise, Butler should move into the No. 3 spot in this week's poll and directly into the national championship discussion.

That's a discussion, please note, that's not going to get above a whisper in El Dorado.

Traveling to play winless Tabor, No. 7- ranked Friends knew if it took care of business the outcome wouldn't be a problem. And Friends came in with a business mentality and left Tabor with a 58-6 victory on Saturday.

"It was a business trip," Friends coach Monty Lewis said. "This was easily our best week of prep. We came out with a purpose today and I don't think we left any doubt."

Friends scored on six of its seven first-half possessions -- the only mishap coming on a lost fumble -- to cruise to a 42-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Alex Melugin threw for 211 yards and four touchdowns.

"We knew that we had more talent than them," Melugin said. "We knew if we came out and did what we had to do then we were going to put up some points. Tabor has talent, but we knew if we did what we could do then we would take care of business."

The Falcons ran the ball effectively with the trio of Frank Miles, Chris Bolander and Brent Craddock at running back and Melugin able to find open receivers all afternoon.

The five touchdowns Butler scored in their 35-17 win over Hutchinson on Saturday night was proof that the Grizzlies' offense, which had averaged nearly 34 points in its previous four games, hasn't slowed since a season-opening loss.

The 17 points Butler allowed, however, gave no indication of how dominant its defense was. Both of Hutchinson's touchdowns came on special teams and the No. 4 Grizzlies held Hutch to just a field goal during five first-half drives that the Blue Dragons started beyond their own 40-yard line.

The performance of the defense, which held Hutch's previously vaunted rushing game in check, left plenty of room for another strong performance by the offense. A balanced attack did just that -- quarterback Press Taylor passed for 214 yards and running backs Randell Bell and Tywon Hubbard each scored two touchdowns.

"I was worried about field position and I never felt like we really had good field position," Butler coach Troy Morrell said. "I felt like our defense did a good job holding them down. Defensively, we only allowed three points. I was concerned about it a little bit, but we did a good job."

Kelly Roberts kicked a 36-yard field goal on Hutch's opening drive, which started at its 49-yard line. The Blue Dragons began their next four series with similar field position but came up empty each time. They failed to pick up a first down on three straight drives before Roberts missed a 38-yard field goal.

Seventh-ranked Northwest Missouri turned Saturday's Fall Classic at Arrowhead into a coronation of being the unquestioned king of Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

In the seventh installment of the football showdown at Arrowhead Stadium, the Bearcats thoroughly whipped undefeated No. 6 Pittsburg State 35-10. And they dominated more than the final score indicated. It was that one-sided

"This is always my favorite game of the year, coming to Arrowhead," Northwest Missouri offensive lineman Reid Kirby said. "I was just really happy the way we finished the game because even a couple of our wins and the blowouts we didn't always finish the best.

"That drive at the end felt so good. It had to be demoralizing for them. It was the best-feeling drive I've had maybe my entire career here."

Northwest Missouri (5-1, 4-0 MIAA) has now won 23 straight MIAA games. Pittsburg State dropped to 5-1 and 3-1.

He gave up the home run that ended the 1960 World Series, Bill Mazeroski's ninth-inning blast that cleared the wall as New York Yankees left-fielder Yogi Berra drifted back helplessly at Pittsburgh's Forbes Fields.

Ralph Terry was 24 then and the most difficult thing he had to do was face legendary Yankees manager Casey Stengel after the game. He revered Stengel, who was managing his final game for the Yankees that day -- in Game 7 of a World Series.

The game had been wild, particularly in the late innings when runs were being scored at a very fast clip. New York had tied the score 9-9 with two runs in the top of the ninth.

The game, though, was over in a flash.

"Well, I had warmed up five times in that game," said the 72-year-old Terry, an Oklahoman by birth who has transformed into a true, blue Kansan during his nearly 50 years living in Larned with his wife, Tanya. "Finally, I got in."

The last team to come out victorious against the Bearcats? Pittsburg State, 2005, Arrowhead Stadium. And this year's Fall Classic at Arrowhead -- part seven -- once again has conference and national implications. Northwest Missouri hasn't given up a score since Sept. 13 against Missouri Western. Pittsburg State is averaging 47.5 points in its last two contests.

The Gorillas already have wins this season in three games that came down to the final minutes. The Bearcats can't say as much, but are rolling with confidence after coming off a blowout win at then-No. 5 Nebraska-Omaha.

KCAC

No. 25 Sterling (2-1, 2-1) at No. 10 Northwestern Oklahoma State (2-1), 2 p.m. -- Sterling will try for its second straight upset over a ranked team after last Saturday's win over Bethel. The Warriors upset the Rangers 22-21in Alva, Okla., last season. Northwestern Oklahoma didn't lose a game after that until the national playoffs.

LeSean McCoy ran for two touchdowns and Bill Stull threw for another as Pittsburgh upset No. 10 South Florida 26-21 on Thursday night in Tampa, Fla.

The Panthers (4-1, 2-0 Big East) have beaten the last three nationally ranked teams they have faced, including No. 23 Cincinnati and No. 2 West Virginia in 2007. They have won two of the last three games with South Florida (5-1, 0-1) in Tampa.

Stull finished 16 for 27 for 228 yards.

Quarterback Matt Grothe accounted for most of South Florida's offense, but the Bulls didn't score any points on offense in the first half. Grothe was 11 of 20 for 129 yards and rushed 11 times for 25 yards, including a 1-yard keeper for a TD in the third.

Grothe threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jessie Hester in the fourth quarter to give the Bulls a 22-20 lead. But Pittsburgh came right back to take the lead, covering 60 yards on three plays in a quick drive that ended with a 3-yard run by McCoy. The 2-point attempt failed.
